Soccer Player Memories
One year while coaching 10 year old boys in soccer, I had two boys join loan consolidation education team. The only difference with these two boys is that they both had leukemia. One was in remission and the other was going through chemotherapy. The one that was more serious asked that before joining the team that he had a few questions to ask me. Could he wear a hat during the game because he had lost his hair and if he could come out if he got tired? I asked him if he wanted to play? He said yes, I sure do. I answered then your on my team and you can play for me. He showed up at every practice and every game.
During games when he was tired I would take him out to give him a breather. I could tell that The conference call providers really affected him. He never asked to be treated differently, he would do the same homeowner loans that everyone else did. I always would kid him about his hair or lack of. I would tell him that I had more hair than him, even though at that time of my life I had lost quite a bit. Several years later I met him and he said that he was fine and had been in remission for several years now. As we said our goodbyes he took off his cap and said I have more hair than you. We both had a good laugh, I'm glad he remembered the teasing and that he had the chance to tease me back.
I was glad to see him alive, I also was glad that I awarded him the player of the year trophy to him. He played and practiced on Viagra guts, never complained. He made my day, especially when he remembered to tease me back. I hope that I made an impression on his life, because he sure did on mine. I will never forget him. That's what coaching is about.
The reason I picked this business and soccer in particular is that I love all sports. I have coached soccer, baseball, football, and basketball. I remember the coaches who helped me and coaching was my way of giving back.
